Institute on Membrane Technology
The Institute on Membrane Technology (CNR-ITM) is a structure created by the Italian National Research Council (CNR – Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) for the development, at national and international level, of membrane science and technology.
It is located in the existing structure of the University of Calabria, Rende (Cosenza). It is a multidisciplinary Institute based on backgrounds in chemical engineering, process engineering, chemistry, biological science, food science, material science and physics. The Institute has 24 units of permanent staff and about 40 temporary units represented by visiting professors, associate professors, Ph.D. students, and postdoctoral fellowships, high educational fellowships from national and international Institutions. Their main research fields include: Synthesis of new artificial membranes; Study of their transport properties; Membrane operations formicrospheres preparation; Membrane operations in desalination and wastewater treatment; Integrated membrane operations for brackish and seawater desalination; Membrane distillation and membrane contactors; Catalytic materials and membranes; Membrane biocatalytic reactors for chemio-, regio and stereoselective production of fine chemicals; Prototype development and technological transfer of advanced membrane operations; Membranes in artificial organs and biotechnologies; Advanced research training and technological transfer.
ITM-CNR has a long experience of work in EU-funded projects (INNOWA, PROMEMBRANE, MEDINA, MEDIRAS, etc.) dealing with water treatment by membrane technology. Its staff has already developed experience in the application of membrane operations to water/seawater treatments, as well as in education and dissemination activities.
